The ABCs of Becoming a Chef or Restaurant Owner
A
chef is a highly skilled and inventive cook who can turn a
delicious meal into an artistic presentation. While it may take
years to become accomplished and known in this field, a proper
education will ensure your success, and financial rewards
Here are some steps to become a chef, work in a hotel,
restaurant or any position in hospitality management.
 |
Work in a restaurant for the experience, even
if it is in a non-cooking position. |
 |
Go to school! Shop around for
different schools depending on what kind of cuisine
you want to pursue and get enrolled... education is a big
plus!! |
 |
Take appropriate
business
courses if you would like to open your own restaurant
eventually or advance to a managerial or executive position |
 |
Always look for the best and be ambitious.
Push yourself to follow your dreams and your heart! |
 |
Be certain that this is the career you wish to
devote your time. Initially, consider taking a short course at
a culinary school while working in a restaurant kitchen. |
Remember, the only way to gain experience is to
get experience. Skill, talent, patience, persistence,
perfectionism, passion and charisma also help out a lot!
A: Educational Requirements
It is preferred that Chefs must have at the very least a
certificate or even better a hospitality management degree.
Also, just because I was going to school, I was offered a paid
apprenticeship at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. The
F&B director visited the school, and talked with the
director, requesting some of his best students. So just
getting enrolled in a culinary school, or hospitality management
school will enable getting your foot in the door a lot
easier!!

B: Finding Funding
A good education isn't cheap, but luckily Uncle Sam is
willing to help. The federal government offers several
student-aid programs to help pay for your educational costs,
including:
 | Pell Grants. |
 | Federal Work-Study Program. |
 | Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
Program. |
 | Stafford Loan Program. |
 | Federal PLUS Loans. |
 | Perkins Loan Program. |
Financial aid -- from small amounts to full tuition with
stipend -- is also available from your college or university,
and many national and community organizations. Ask your
financial aid office for information.
C: Success Requires Knowledge and Preparation
You can't just get into a car and drive. As you travel your path of professional development, you will
discover that a job in the culinary arts and hospitality
management is an art and science. It requires
knowledge and preparation, skill and commitment, patience and
understanding. And getting a good job requires an education.
It opened many doors for me, and makes a difference. It is
not a bad way to
make a living indeed.
